Black Nativity: A Season for Change Director's Notes
Holidays are times for families and communities to renew themselves. In the 21st century, with the use of some of the most amazing technology to help keep us connected, we have drift ed apart. We oft en do not even consider our isolation until times of trouble are upon us. One of the reasons Black Nativity is so important is that our hope and our faith are connected to us coming together as one. When individuals and families tie their lives to each other, we are strengthened. Together, we can weather most any storm. Together, our happiness is more joyful. This year, as in the most recent incarnations of Black Nativity, we visit with the fictional Walker Family of Saint Paul. The family's gifts to us are movement and music. They will sing old songs in new ways and introduce new songs for you to enjoy. A special thanks to Penumbra's third annual quilting circle, led by master artists Gail Hanson and Cecile Margaret Lewis, for the beautiful quilt created for this production. We hope that this version of Black Nativity brings you appreciation of the spirit and a most soulful holiday season. Dominic Taylor, |
