Penumbra Theatre, a mission-driven arts organization, promotes the idea that the ultimate role of the arts is to provoke thought, challenge ideas, redefine humanity and create dialogue. We are not in the business to entertain; we are in the business to create social change. This is the model we use at Summer Institute to help students understand the concept of responsible artistry - it is one the company has been perfecting for over three decades. It is also the model that has made Penumbra Theatre Company the preeminent African American theatre company in the nation.
