Internship Information and Application

Institute for Interns: Pedagogies of Art for Social Change
Duration: June 24, 2012 through August 4, 2012
Stipends Available

This cutting-edge internship program runs in tandem with our Summer Institute and is designed to give students the opportunity to explore innovative and communal ways to teach art and social justice in a holistic and culturally specific manner. Interns have the opportunity to participate in Summer Institute courses, work with the professional instructors and test run their creative ideas, aspirations and exercises with creative young people eager to make the world a more humane, just and creative place. The Institute for Interns will explore and deepen comprehension of integrated educative practices that use art as a platform for learning, expression and activism.

Summer Institute Interns for 2011

HANNAH
HANNAH is a senior at Macalester College. She is pursuing a major in American Studies and a minor in Theatre. Originally from Evanston, Illinois, Hannah is a founding member of the Underage Sugar Addicts, Chicago’s only independent youth improv troupe. She has been actively involved in theater for the last ten years. Her social justice interests involve public education and dismantling racial segregation.


NATHAN
Nathan is a sophomore at Lawrence University, where he is working towards a double major in Spanish and Theater. He serves on multiple committees at Lawrence and is involved in many student organizations and theatrical productions. Nathan is passionate about issues surrounding the LGBTQ community as well as adoption and interracial families. Nathan is the current Claude Edison Purdy Fellow at Penumbra Theatre.

NATHAN
NATHAN recently graduated from Macalester College with a degree in English and a thirst for art. Intrigued most by the normalization of traditional gender roles, Nathan works to embolden those who do not conform to the status quo. He seeks to encourage love for others through love of self.

 

Oral History Project: Foundations for a Living Legacy
Duration: 3 week Projects
Unpaid

Students interested in history, cultural studies, sociology, ethnography or anthropology will find that this internship is engaging and offers practical field experience. Students will conduct and transcribe interviews with the activist artists and community members who have supported Penumbra Theatre’s artistic and ethical responsibility to create powerful, provocative art for social change.

The Wilson Lab Oral History Project is designed to archive the personal, professional and anecdotal stories of the artists, activists, community members and scholars affiliated with Penumbra's early aesthetic.
