Institute for Interns: Pedagogies of Art for Social Change

This cutting-edge internship program runs in tandem with our Summer Institute and is designed to give students the opportunity to explore innovative and communal ways to teach art and social justice in a holistic and culturally specific manner. Interns have the opportunity to participate in Summer Institute courses, work with the professional instructors and test run their creative ideas, aspirations and exercises with creative young people eager to make the world a more humane, just and creative place. The Institute for Interns will explore and deepen comprehension of integrated educative practices that use art as a platform for learning, expression and activism.

ADAM Adam is a native of Detroit, MI and a graduate of Cass Technical High School. He is currently a junior in the University of Minnesota/Guthrie B.F.A Actor Training Program with a minor in African American Studies. He is a proud alumnus of the Mosiac Youth Theatre of Detroit and is
Honored to share his experience as an intern for Penumbra Theatre's Summer Institute. Adam is an
Active member of the spoken word community in Minneapolis. He is extremely excited to study theater
this fall in the city of London.
ANNA Anna is a graduate of the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. She now attends
the University of Minnesota where she is pursuing a major in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies
and a minor in Theatre. She also studies creative writing and vocal music. She is honored to be interning for Penumbra Theatre's Summer Institute.
REBECCA Rebecca is a senior at the University of Minnesota, double majoring in Theatre Arts and Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies. She was involved as an apprentice and technical journey man at the Warehouse Theatre in Greenville, South Carolina for four years and worked for four summers at Porthouse Theatre in Kent, Ohio as a lead carpenter and props master. She spent the past year studying International Development and Education in Kenya. During her time there, she interned at the Mombasa Youth Counseling center as a Peer Youth educator. Rebecca is thrilled to be an intern with Penumbra Theatre's Summer Institute and is looking forward to moving to Kenya in the
near future.
YEFEI Yefei is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota. He is an Asian Languages and Theatre major. In his spare time, he enjoys to cook and watch movies. He is happy to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of artists and is very excited to be part of Penumbra Theatre's Summer Institute.
Oral History Project: Foundations for a Living Legacy
Duration: 3 week Projects

Students interested in history, cultural studies, sociology, ethnography or anthropology will find that this internship is engaging and offers practical field experience. Students will conduct and transcribe interviews with the activist artists and community members who have supported Penumbra Theatre’s artistic and ethical responsibility to create powerful, provocative art for social change.
The Wilson Lab Oral History Project is designed to archive the personal, professional and anecdotal stories of the artists, activists, community members and scholars affiliated with Penumbra's early aesthetic.
