TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF ACTIVIST ARTISTS
Summer Institute is one of Penumbra's oldest and most highly regarded programs. Through our innovative curriculum, the courses we offer make the craft elements of performance inseparable from the question of social responsibility and community action. Our students are creative young people eager to make the world a more humane, just and creative place.
During the four week summer program, students are charged with creating socially responsible art that is authentic, empowering and practically applicable to their lives and communities. Not only do students learn from professional artists, the curriculum emphasizes the role of the arts in social justice movements. Students explore their own potential to employ their passions and become agents for change. The program is highly intensive and for committed students only.
Each year we induct a new graduating class into the Penumbra ensemble. This unique program promises students the opportunity to feel part of something larger - epic in scope - a way of living and producing art that was and still can be revolutionary. Our students are inspired, active and creative youth who will, as their predecessors have, leave an indelible mark on the American theatre landscape.
