Lou Bellamy Wins an Obie and a Lucille Lortel! - June 5, 2007
Penumbra’s very own Lou Bellamy won an Obie Award for his New York directorial debut, a production of August Wilson’s Two Trains Running that played at the Signature Theatre Company in New York.

The Obies are the best-known and most prestigious awards honoring excellence in New York’s off-Broadway theater community.

Upon his return, Bellamy said, “What amazed me is that there is a downtown New York group of theatres, a coalition of artists, who really have a feel for who they are and what it means to produce work off-Broadway. This work is edgy and art driven--places like Labyrinth, The Public, Signature, and Playwrights Horizons… I felt a connection between what Penumbra does here in the Twin Cities with these artists producing their work off-Broadway.”

But that’s not all folks!
Bellamy’s production of Two Trains Running staged at the Signature Theatre also received the 2007 Lucille Lortel for Best Revival!

The Lucille Lortel Awards were instituted in 1985 to recognize outstanding achievement on off-Broadway stages.

Congratulations Lou Bellamy! We are very proud.
