Our Response to COVID-19

As a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our patrons, artists, and staff, Penumbra’s leadership and board has made the decision to cancel all events through May, including:

March 23: Let’s Talk: Becoming
April 6: REEL Talk: Charm City
April 21 through May 17: Target Presents: How Black Mothers Say I Love You
April 27 and May 18: Bookends
May 11: Let’s Talk: Sankofa

This is not a decision that we made lightly but one that we are committed to; understanding that the future remains at this point, quite uncertain. We completed design and director contracts for our spring production of How Black Mothers Say I Love You, and, though we hadn’t begun rehearsals yet, we ensured that the cast, the crew, and front of house staff received two week’s pay.

As cancellations of performances and gatherings become more widespread in the wake of COVID-19, the financial impact on artists and theatres locally and nationally is becoming a harsh reality. If you are a current ticket holder for a cancelled performance and would like to support our mission during this difficult time, please consider donating your ticket(s) as a tax-deductible gift to Penumbra. This will be a challenging time, especially for theatres of color that already struggle with undercapitalization. But we will move forward with plans to launch our 44th season in the fall and prepare to welcome artists and audiences to our theatre to create the powerful, meaningful work for which Penumbra is known.
